The GEGIS Research & Trials group combines clinical and technical expertise in service innovation, clinical trials, gastrointestinal pathology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, machine learning, database design and implementation to generate, leverage, and analyse clinical and multi-omics datasets.
Our team brings together individuals with unique skill sets, including those with leadership and supervisory capacity, to deliver timely, impactful and practice changing outcomes for our patients and organisations.

Aly is a General surgeon currently practicing at Austin Health as part of the GATES unit. Aly completed his surgical training through the Austin after working in most Victorian major training hubs as a surgical registrar. Aly is very passionate about education and training, currently a tutor and mentor for University of Melbourne’s Austin Clinical School MD2 students.
Aly is the Australian Donation and Transplant Biobank (ADTB) Surgical retrieval fellow and is currently undertaking a masters degree through the University of Melbourne and the department of Surgery Austin Health, investigating patient outcomes after Hiatal hernia repairs in an attempt to define the most important criteria for a successful Hiatal hernia repair. |
Darren is a gastroenterologist and general physician with interests in clinical nutrition and intestinal rehabilitation. He is also the Deputy Director of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Austin Health.
He holds a PhD in molecular biology and hepatology, and a Masters in Biostatistics. His research interests include clinical and translation studies aimed at improving patient care and service delivery. He also gets excited about data analysis and statistical storytelling! |
Dr Eunice Lee is hepato-pancreato-biliary, liver transplant and general surgeon at Austin Health and Monash Medical Centre. Eunice is a clinical lecturer at the University of Melbourne. She has completed a PhD through the University of Melbourne and leads a number of collaborative research and data linkage studies. She is a member of the BEACON collaborative, Austin Health Clinical Ethics Review group and a peer reviewer for the ANZ Journal of Surgery.
She is passionate about data science and bioinformatics, and is committed to building ongoing collaborations across a wide range of disciplines to improve clinical practice. |
Dr Steve Kunz
Research Fellow Dr. Steve Kunz is a post-exam general surgical registrar with an interest in upper GI, abdominal wall, and acute general surgery, along with critical care and surgical education. He is a clinical lecturer with the University of Melbourne, RACS EMST instructor, and has taught overseas in Timor Leste.
He has undertaken successful research projects in optimising surgical outcomes in critical situations, trauma education in medical students, and the epidemiology of pancreatitis, and is currently undertaking a Masters of Philosophy. He is also passionate about improving the wellbeing of trainees as they progress, is the current chair of the Austin/Northern Surgical trainees Association, and is a staunch advocate of flexible training. |
